Senior Mechanical Engineer
Overview
GBvi is a small growing company specialised in projection display technology and is a world leader in optical blending. At GBvi we continually introduce new products and related services to sell to display integrators in Simulation & Training, Entertainment, Museums, Gaming and other industries. To continue this growth, we need a Software and Systems Engineer who can quickly become an integral member of the company and is willing, in addition to the core engineering functions, to do whatever is needed within reason! Indeed, this role is envisaged to include significant contribution to “how the company works” through participation in R&D, project engineering, product development and process introductions.
General Role and Responsibilities
To lead the mechanical design engineering activities in the company, including:
- Undertake design of mechanical subsystems and products to a high standard (more detail below)
- Ensure good practice is followed re. design processes and documentation
- Provide expert oversight of mechanical designs and provide guidance to other engineers
- Become expert in our product and services range
- Manage technical enquiries from colleagues and customers
- Be able to execute a deliverable project from enquiry through to delivery
Design activities include:
- Optical blending components and assemblies for customer projects
- Projector mounts
- New product developments
- In-house build, configuration and test of deliverable and development hardware
- Preparation of demonstrations, in-house, on-site and at trade shows, including international travel, sometimes at short notice.
Related Activities, Including but not limited to;
- Blending system design – to become knowledgeable in the requirements for and testing of optical blend solutions
- Contributing to product developments; feedback from projects
- Perform key projection and related testing, both in-house and on-site, to characterize opto-mechanical systems and devise deliverable solutions
- Analysis of dynamic structures for stress, strain, deflection and safety under static and motion conditions

Qualifications and Education Requirements
- BSc (Hons) equivalent or higher in mechanical engineering
- Or HNC equivalent plus relevant experience
- Good GCSEs or equivalent in Maths and English.
Essential Skills
- Mechanical engineering design principles, including design for stiffness & integrity and to cost targets.
- Experience working with CAD, preferably Autodesk Inventor.
- Experience and appreciation of engineering documentation within an ERP system
- Working to ISO 9001 or a similar quality management standard.
- Strong grasp of physics and geometry relevant to 3D environments (real and virtual).
- Ability to learn and apply oneself to new areas, including those related to real-time visual environments.
- Fluency in office software (e.g., MS Office / Google docs) – spreadsheets, word-processing, presentations.
- Good interpersonal skills – confidence, positivity, communication, teamwork, problem-solving, time management, managing pressure, flexibility, work ethic.
Desirable Skills
- Finite Element Analysis
- IT skills – PC configuration, use of apps
- Experience with Trimble Sketchup
- Some programming knowledge, e.g., in scripting, web design (javascript, HTML) or C#
- Use of image processing tools such as Fiji / ImageJ
